Fixed asset numbers can be manually entered or automatically generated when entering a new fixed asset. The Asset numbers can be characters, numbers or the combination of both. On the Header of the Fixed Asset Acquisition document, three fields are used in the automatic generation of an asset number: Auto Generate FA Number flag, Prefix, and Fixed Asset Number.
This Auto Fixed Asset Numbering table is the source of those automatically generated fixed asset numbers. The table is similar to the Unique Numbers table, but is specific to only fixed asset numbering.
When the flag is selected and the document is validated with no value entered in the number field, the application will read the Auto Fixed Asset Numbering table for the single record that is marked as the Default Prefix. The fixed asset will then be assigned the Next Available Asset No for that default record along with the Prefix itself. If there is no default record and no prefix entered on the document, an error will be issued as a number cannot be generated.
If the flag was checked with no value entered in the number field and a Prefix is entered, then the Auto Fixed Asset Numbering table will be read for that Prefix and the Next Available Asset No for that record, along with the Prefix, will be returned to the document. If a Prefix is entered on a fixed asset document that does not have an Auto Fixed Asset Numbering table record, then an error will be issued as a number cannot be generated.
